In the beginning, God created the universe with a word. It was not taxing or difficult, He did not break a sweat. He spoke and the universe came into existence.
He didn’t have to go find parts to make it out of, learn physics or search for blueprints. No one gave him advice. He spoke and the universe existed. Up and running.
In terms of vastness, traveling at the speed of light it would take us
100,000 years to leave our Galaxy, 1 Million years to reach the next galaxy over, 100 Million years to start to reach the farthest galaxies we have been able to map. And the universe keeps going from there.
To touch on God’s creativity, we have found:
A blue planet that rains glass – sideways,
A planet of burning ice,
A planet made entirely of diamond,
A pulsar eating a star,
Nebulas,
Neutrinos,
Quasars,
Magnetars,
Dark matter,
White matter,
Cold stars,
Hot ice,
Planets without solar systems that wander the universe alone,
Stars without planets flying through space at trillions of miles-per-hour,
Freezing nebulas,
A galaxy shaped like a sombrero,
A place that smells like raspberries,
Stars that sing.
We have counted more than 10,000 galaxies in a piece of the sky about the size of ¼ of the full moon.
And our God created all of that with a word.
And when we consider all of this, the book of Job says we have only seen the fringe of His works.
When we hear all that the universe has to tell us about God, Job says, “how faint the whisper we hear of him!”
The universe was created to declare the glory of God and John Piper says that the universe is an understatement! Compared to the actual glory of our God, all of that vastness, and beauty and power and creativity does not begin to express Him.
Our God is in every part of His great universe at every moment of all time. He is in control of every event in His universe, in all parts of His universe, in all moments of all time.
Our God is in charge. He is in control. He knows every possibility for every place, and creature and object and atom and molecule at all times in all places, and in every alternate combination of events and reactions and chains of reaction that could possibly ripple throughout all time for every circumstance in every possibility in His universe. And out of every possible, possible, possible, possibility, He chooses the best and makes it happen – perfectly.
